Amazing Laos Surprises yourself

Amazing Laos Surprises yourself

Thought of as the most enigmatic of the three French Indochina states, Laos is definitely the sleepiest. At least for the moment. After years of isolation, Laos is now slowly opening its doors to the world – mainly a result of the Friendship Bridge over the Mekong River linking Vientiane with Thailand. these days you have to actually look both ways before crossing the road in Vientiane and the main road in Lung Prabang is lined with western restaurants. Having said that, tourism (and life!) is remarkably low key even on the tourist axis of Vientiane, Vang Vien and Luang Prabang. Off the axis life is much the same as it has been for years.

Vientiene, the capital, is emerging from hundreds of years of slumber and the centre now even boasts a number of restaurants and bars. The hotels aren’t much with the exception of the Villa Manoli – a beautiful old villa in a sumptuous garden. It even has a small swimming pool – all for about $20 a night.

After a day’s wandering around the magnificent temples, there is nothing better than strolling up the river bank to the stilted restaurants and enjoying a great Mekong sunset over a cold Bia Lao and a spicy pork Laap (minced meat salad) or sizzling Mekong catfish.

Vang Vieng has become something of a backpacker centre in recent years. Positioning has probably been the key to its popularity as it is half way between Luang Prabang and Vientiane and is therefore used to breakup an otherwise long day on the road. It is also prettily situated on the Nam Song river, the focus of the town. There are a few riverside places (bars would be too flash a name) to buy a beer and watch people float by – either in inner tubes or canoes. There is also a small market and a few stalls off the river selling handicrafts and some travel agents who can organise day trips up the river or to local caves.

Luang Prabang is the jewel in Laos’ crown and has been a UNESCO heritage site since 1995. It has recently seen a sudden influx of tourists resulting in an explosion of restaurants and handicraft shops along the main drag. Five star hotels have also started appearing along the fringes of town. Despite this, there are so many temples to see they are never crowded. In addition, the back streets are usually deserted and if you are lucky enough to happen upon a temple festival you are more than likely to be one of only a few foreigners present. There is also the timeless view of the Mekong River, behind which the untamed jungle goes on into the distant hills.

Alternatively, the museum’s planetarium offers visitors the chance to see the night sky in all its glory away from the light pollution of city life. For those hankering to take in a film, the centre boasts an IMAX Cinema which lets movie-goers experience movies on a whole new level than conventional cinemas. With a screen that measures larger than a 5-a-side football pitch and accompanied by a 12,000 watt sound system, the IMAX broadcasts films in both 2D and 3D formats that will amaze and astound viewers.

Round off the day with a ride up the Glasgow Tower which offers spectacular aerial views over the city and surrounding countryside.

Most younger children are fascinated by machinery and vehicles, and if your child falls into this category then a trip to the Museum of Transport is sure to please. In addition to shipbuilding, Glasgow is also well renowned for its manufacture of locomotives and the Museum of Transport carries an impressive collection of famous locomotives from through the years.

Of course, the city offers much more in the way of attractions, including leisure centres, parks, galleries and others and visitors to the city will be spoilt for choice for something to do. How to Take Advantage of the Disney World Fast pass – By Best Hotel Deals

People who have visited a Disney World theme park have always had to wait patiently in long lines before they are able to enjoy one of the more popular rides. These days, you don’t have to do that anymore should you use the Fastpass.

The Fastpass is a ticket that allows you to skip through the long lines. Instead of walking to the standby entrance which means you have to wait for 30 minutes, you can immediately ride it again by going to the Fastpass Return Time entrance that only takes a minute.

Aurora Lillo Editor of the “Best Hotel Deals” website — http://www.BestHotelDeals.biz — pointed out;

“…So where do you get the Fastpass ticket? You can get this from the Fastpass distribution area near the entrance of the attraction. Here you will find the list of attractions where this can be used and the return time display which tells you how long you have to go back to that ride to use your ticket. In some cases, you can only use the Fastpass after one to two hours. If that is the case, you can explore the other attractions in the theme park then just return when it is just minutes away…”

But how do you take advantage of the Fastpass? Well for that, given that it can only be used once, it is best to get a new one before you ride. You should do some comparison shopping because knowing the standby entrance time and Fastpass return will let you know which one makes better use of this privilege.

The best thing about the Fastpass is that it is free so you should get yours early before the machine runs out of these tickets.

The existing rides where the Fastpass can be used include Autopia in Tomorrowland, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in Frontierland, Buzz Light-year Astro Blasters in Tomorrowland, Haunted Mansion Holiday in New Orleans Square, Indiana Jones Adventure in Adventureland, Roger Rabbits Car Toon Spin in Toontown, Space Mountain in Tomorrowland and Splash Mountain in Critter Country.

“…Aside from the Fastpass, another way to fight the long lines is to split up from your group and use the Single Rider option. To maximize the number of passengers on each trip, a cast member will let you be seated in one of the open seats left on the ride. This is very ideal especially for the teenagers who like to ride it again. The only problem is that only a handful of rides allow this and you have to wait in the standby line…” added A. Lillo.

Great Guides to Help You Plan Your Travel Budget

Great Guides to Help You Plan Your Travel Budget

There are literally hundreds of guides on budget travel to be found on the Internet and in bookstores. Some are useful, some are not. It really depends on what you want and where you are going. Many web sites offer email subscriptions and regular updates on where the best deals are. So how do you decide which ones are the most useful? A lot of the sites are confusing, so how do you find the ones that are going to give you the information you need?

Online bookstores have sections on travel guides. Try Amazon or specialty travel book stores like the Globe Corner Bookstores. They have an amazing array of guide books for the traveler on a budget. The most important thing to keep in mind about published guidebooks is that once the information is printed, it is probably out of date. Although most of them are updated annually, you cannot take what is written as set in stone. Internet guides are preferable in this area because their information is updated sometimes on a daily basis so all the deals on offer are available when you see them.

The best guides seem to be the ones that give you specific information on either your choice of destination or the type of holiday you will be taking (family vacation, backpacking, students, seniors, etc). There are the well known guide books/web sites like The Lonely Planet that will give you information on just about every destination you can think of. Or you can contact the embassy of the place you want to visit or go to the library to find out more about your choice of destination.  Most web sites will also have links to travel deals that are from the site sponsors. Some of the deals look great but research them. Compare to other sites to get the best deal for you.

Some guides worth having a look at for the budget traveler are:

* ‘The World’s Cheapest Destinations’ by Tim Leffel

* ‘Europe on $70 a Day’ by Arthur Frommer

*  Any guidebook from the Lonely Planet ‘Shoestring’ series

*  Any guidebook from the ‘Cheap Eats and Sleeps’ series

If you are backpacking, getting a guide on hostels in the area you are traveling to is a good idea. There are many sites dedicated to finding hostels. You will be able to get prices and make bookings in advance.

Once you know where you are traveling you’ll be able to find a guide on just about anything. How to get there, where to sleep, where to eat, what to visit and how to travel around are all going to be available in a travel guide. And once you get to your destination go to the local tourist information stand and look at what other helpful guides are available.
