Visit Aragon for stunning scenery and fabulous Mudejar architecture

There are many reasons to visit Aragon. Aragon is the region to head for if you are looking for a quiet holiday in beautiful and unspoilt countryside. Some of the best Pyrenean countryside can be found in the north of the region, particularly in the National Park of Ordesa. This is excellent walking country and contains lots of peaks, canyons and waterfalls. Many of Aragon’s visitors come for the walking, mountaineering, abseiling and canyoning.
The Sierra de Guara National Park is another area of Aragon that attracts sports enthusiasts, particularly those keen on canyoning for which it is the main centre in Europe. This area is also particularly rich in history and has such a large number of painted pre-historic caves in the river Vero canyon that it has been made a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Alquezar is a good base for sports enthusiasts and for those wishing to explore the caves.
As well as the fabulous scenery Aragon has some splendid architecture. Notably it is extremely rich in Mudejar architecture. This is a particularly beautiful form of architecture which came about after the Reconquest when the Spanish conquerors used Muslim builders to build churches, towers and mansions. These have a distinctly Moorish feel. There are so many good examples of Mudejar architecture to see in Aragon that these too have been made a UNESCO World Heritage Sight. Zaragoza, the capital of Aragon is a good place to head to and here you can see the enormous Aljaferia palace. Teruel with its Mudejar cathedral and towers is another notable town for Mudejar architecture. Both of these towns should be top of your list of places to visit in Aragon.
As well as the Mudejar architecture Aragon has a large number of lovely, unspoilt little villages that you will see as you explore the region, and quite a number of attractive medieval towns and villages that are well worth a visit.
For those wishing to tour the area in style and stay in historic spots renovated to provide a luxury visit Aragon has four Paradors. These can be found in Bielsa, Sos del Rey Catolico, Alcaniz and Teruel.
