A Trip to Alamut Fortress During Your Tour to Iran

During your tour to Iran, it will be a fascinating experience to take a trip to Alamut in order to be personally familiar with the kind of terrain and location where these people stayed in. It helps you learn and remember why assassins had chosen this site to lead their resistance movement against the foreign Seljuk invaders.
A Word about Assassins
As a sub-branch of Shiite Muslims, Ismailis, known as Assassins in the Western world, used to have several fortresses as their residence and strongholds in some hard-reaching areas of Iran since Seljuk period. The pioneer of this school of thought whose name is always associated with Ismailis, Hassan-e-Sabbah, was living in this fortress until he died a natural death. Taking a trip to Alamut fortress will provide you with an opportunity to get acquainted with the mentality of this group of Iranians who had cast fear and awe into the hearts of the aggressors occupying Iran.
Location of Alamut Fortress
Remember that during your tour to Iran, it’s definitely worth taking a trip to Alamut at the north west of Qazvin city. You should cross the Alborz mountains and drive through 100s of curves on asphalt road for nearly 120 km to get to the fortress. Figures and words cannot express the excitement of this mysterious journey. You keep wondering how people could decide to pick up such a location for their fortress, how they could survive there specially in the freezing cold of winter, and a lot of other questions.
This fortress was in use by the local governors of the Alborz long before Hassan-e-Sabbah ended up there. Considering the hardship of the trip by today’s means of transportation, it could be realized how much more difficult it could have been for the foreign invaders to discover this area.
Passing through Moalem Kelayeh, you know that you need around 20 km to continue on the same road to get to an intersection where you turn left toward Gazorkhan village. This village is just a few hundred meters before Alamut fortress. Believe it or not, travelers can hardly pinpoint the fortress when it is in front of their eyes even before they get to the village!
The Best Time to Take a trip to Alamut
The best time of the year to take a trip to Alamut would be in April and May to visit this site. September and October could be other months of the year that you can take a trip to Alamut as the weather isn’t unpleasant yet. Winter is the time when nobody recommends you to go there. Typically, any tour to Iran will be more or less about this time period.
In April or May, depending on the temperature and in the actual Spring, the breathtaking beauty of the mountains will make the long journey short for you. You don’ see very rugged mountains like in some other parts of the Alborz. When the soft fresh green grass covers the curvy hills and reflects the sunshine in a mild climate, you take pleasure in inhaling plenty of pure oxygen in the air and enjoy the invigorating scenery.
The climate changes so dramatically during your ride from Qazvin to Alamut that you get to see rice paddies low in the plains close to the river although snow-capped peaks of the region still raise their heads above the adjacent moluntains.
The Shape of Alamut Fortress
This stronghold is behind and within a huge virgin rock that looks like any other rocks in the range to the extent that it could be easily mistaken with the rest of them. You get to the foot of the hill where the rocky fortress is and you still have difficulty to see it. You have to walk around it and climb some very difficult cliffs to be able to see the entrance.
Now, put yourself in the shoes of those who take a trip to Alamut. As a guest who doesn’t have the fear of being seen and targeted by the guards, you will be filled with wonder as to how to get in. Just imagine how hard it had definitely been for those foreign troops unfamiliar with it. Surely, an exploration into the fortress itself will be like decoding the secrecy of life and survival in this overwhelming fortress.
