How to Avoid Thieves on Holiday

Nothing is worse than having something stolen from you when you are on holiday. It is important for every traveller to be aware of the fact that there are those who will prey on tourists who are on holiday so that they can get their money. Tourists are an easy target for thieves for many reasons. They are not familiar with the area, they are usually distracted by what they are observing and they are usually carrying money with them. You can avoid thieves when you go on holiday by taking these simple tips:
1. Stay with the Crowd
If you stick with the crowd instead of venturing into unknown territories, you have a better chance of not becoming a victim of those who may try to take your money. While pickpockets and others will work large crowds of tourists, you are generally safer when you are with other people than if you are alone. Although it may seem exciting to venture into different places alone, make sure that you have company and preferably someone who is familiar with the area before you do this sort of sightseeing.
2.  Carry Travellers’ Checks
Instead of carrying cash, you can use Travellers’ Checks or debit cards for your trip. Carry as little cash with you as possible when you are travelling so that you do not stand to lose everything in case someone grabs your wallet or your purse. These items are useless to thieves and can be replaced.
3.  Make Use of Hotel Safes
You should make sure your valuables are secure when you are travelling as well. You should make use of hotel safes when you are staying in a hotel so that you can store jewellery as well as money in the safes. Many hotels have safes in the room for guests today who want a safe place to keep their valuables while they are out. You should never leave out cash or anything of value in your room when you are out of the room.
4.  Only Carry What You Need
you should only carry the cash that you need when you are going out and store other money into a hotel safe. This can minimize your loss in case you actually do become a victim of a thief. You should also carry your money in different places. Instead of putting all of your money in a wallet, for example, you can carry some in your shoe. You should never have all of your holiday money in your wallet or purse when you are out sightseeing on holiday. Only take what you need and keep it in various places on your person.
5.  Be Alert
most thieves will prey on those who are not alert. They will often try to distract you and pick your pocket or take your purse. Very few thieves that prey on tourists will threaten tourists with harm. Most of them rely on trickery and the fact that the tourist is unfamiliar with the area and carrying cash in order to get what they want. You should always be alert of your surroundings, avoid large crowds where it is easy for people to bump into you and remove your wallet without you even realizing it and be mindful of those who may want to take your picture, engage you in some type of conversation or even ask for something when you are on holiday.
