Fears and Questions That Tourists Have About South Africa

Visitors coming to South Africa don’t always know what to expect or what they are going to see. Below I have selected some of the most asked questions and have supplied some suggestions but there are numerous things to do and see. So numerous in fact that if I had to write it all down here this article will turn out to be a book. So please use the suggestions but know that there are many more things on often in this incredible country.

Security:

South Africa is a land of incredible beauty but as a developing country you definitely have to be security conscious and inquire about the guidelines that need to be followed in regard to this at the airports, tourism information desks and police station. By following these guidelines you will have a hassle free and enjoyable holiday.

Should I visit Johannesburg?

Johannesburg isn’t a bad place to visit and there are a lot of interesting attractions in and around Johannesburg. If you enjoy shopping then this is definitely a shopper’s paradise from the Oriental Plaza to Sandton City there is a wide selection of boutiques, interesting items and many more. Most malls have restaurants, cinemas and much, much more. If you enjoy the gaming zone then go and look at some of the casinos such as Emperors palace, Carnival city and Gold reef city.

There are amusement parks and tours for everyday sight seers. If you’re feeling adventurous then take one of the township tours or stay in the 4star Protea hotel in Soweto.

If it’s wild life you’re after then Johannesburg offers a few day parks such as the lion park or elephant sanctuary and Johannesburg zoo is also a very popular attraction. All in all look at spending about 4 days in Johannesburg to see the sights and attractions and don’t miss out the night life.

Where are the good hiking areas?

If you are a hiking enthusiast then there are many hiking trails to be tried. My personal favourite is the hiking trails in Barberton near Nelspruit. The scenery is exquisite with its ruggedness and beauty. If you are looking for more information on different trails around South Africa then go to http://www.trails.co.za/  to see some of the best trails in and around South Africa.

What type of safari is the best?

The best safari type outing is definitely the Kruger National Park which offers a wide range of accommodations from camping to luxury chalets. It is roughly the size of great Britain, so there is definitely a lot of exploring to be done. The best thing you can do is stay for about a week to experience some of the wonderful things to be experienced in the park such as night drives and sunrise guarded walks through the wild. There are a few other parks to be looked into like the Pielansberg nature reserve. For more information about South Africa’s parks and reserves go to southafrica-traveL on the net.

What is a good Wine tour?

The wine tours in the Western Cape are fantastic with a lot to offer. It is always a good idea to book a tour to the various wine routes but if you wanted to do so yourself then why not hire a car from places such as www.wisewheels.co.za and please remember that South Africa has a strict policy against drinking and driving. A good site to go to for different tours on offer is wineanorak so look them up for more information.

What else is there to do?

Some other wonderful spots are on the Kwazulu Natal coastline and if you like fishing then don’t miss the Amanzimtoti Sardine run which occurs yearly and has turned into a wonderful festival called the Amanzimtoti sardine splash. Go visit the Grahamstown Arts festival for a cultural explosion occurring yearly this celebration of the arts is always a good fun and enlightening experience.

Should I fly, drive or go by train from Cape Town to Johannesburg?

The question of flying driving or going by train is a bit of a conundrum as it depends how much of South Africa you would like to see and how much time you have. To drive from Cape Town to Johannesburg can take 1 to 2 days depending on whether you stop half way or not but driving can be a pleasurable experience as you will be able to see a whole lot more of the diversity South Africa has to offer but word of warning try to plan the route before you go as it can be a very long journey if you don’t. Why not hire a car or get more information from www.southafrica-carhire.com. Going by train is also a lot of fun to experience life in South Africa. It is a set journey that can take up to 5 days but you see some beautiful country side and have some fabulous experiences. Flying is obviously the quickest way to go as it takes an average of 2hrs to fly from Cape Town to Johannesburg with many service providers for your flight booking. Shop around and you can probably find a very, very cheap ticket.

Go and explore this welcoming and absolutely amazing country and see diversity and things of interest that you would never have imagined seeing or experiencing.

Snowbirds Flock to Orange County Beaches

Snowbirds Flock to Orange County Beaches

Every year more and more snowbirds are migrating to the many beaches of California. With over 1,000 miles of shoreline, almost 120 beach cities, and over 450 beaches, it can be tough decision choosing a place to stay. All beach towns are definitely not alike and the shorelines range from coarse to fine sandy beaches to, pebbles and rocks.
The Orange County area is one of my favorite winter getaways. It’s close enough to Los Angeles for those times when you need a big city fix, but far enough removed that you can still find a quiet, uncrowded haven to enjoy an ocean view. You can walk or ride a bike for miles along the beaches and ocean front walkways and soak up the sun in the moderate winter temperatures. Here is a run-down of some of my favorite Orange County beach towns.
Seal Beach
Great beach shopping, including clothing for the over-25 crowd, with fewer crowds than Laguna or Newport; this combined with free parking make this beach an all around winner. It has plenty of dining choices, entertainment, and an Old Town featuring wide, shady streets. You can fish from one of the longest piers in the state, and enjoy views that go on forever.
Huntington Beach
Also known as “Surf City” and the subject of the song by the same name, Huntington Beach was a humble surf town that evolved into a growing city with a population over 195,000. Residents and visitors are treated to eight miles of uninterrupted scenic beachfront, the 350-acre Central Park complex, biking/walking and equestrian trails, world class surfing and professional sporting events such as AVP Pro Beach Volleyball and the Surf City USA Marathon. The long pier is the perfect place to watch surfers or stop for breakfast and enjoy the morning view.
The Main St. is famous for its surf shops, but dig deeper and you’ll find the 5 Points Shopping Center filled with popular outlet stores, and the Bella Terra Mall with a new 20-screen theater. One of the nation’s largest shopping malls, South Coast Plaza, is located only minutes away. Huntington Beach is also conveniently located only 15 miles from Disneyland, 15 minutes from Newport Beach and Long Beach, and acts as a bedroom community for Los Angeles or Orange County commuters.
Newport Beach
Newport Beach is the epitome of a California beach town and an ideal winter escape from the cold. The City of Newport includes 22 square miles of ocean and bay, which includes several islands and the five mile stretch known as the Newport or Balboa Peninsula. This little gem is full of shops, restaurants, sandy beaches, two piers, boat rentals, boat cruises, and prime surfing spots. You can shop ’til you drop at the nearby Fashion Island, with its 200 specialty stores, 40 restaurants and a cinema.
Golfers delight in several nearby courses including Newport Beach Golf Course, Hyatt Newporter Golf Course and Pelican Hills Golf Course.
Some of the most lucrative real estate in southern California is located among the seven islands that make up Newport Beach. Homes upwards of $2 million are surrounded by one of the world’s largest small yacht harbors.

Travel Maps

In recent years booking holidays / hotels online has become very popular. Such sites as Expedia.com and Lastminute.com have allowed people to find and book their dream holidays through the click of a mouse. Since the launch of Google Maps in 2005 a new trend has arose, involving the way we search and view accommodation online.

Using the Google Map API companies are creating “Google mashups”. This is a web page or application that integrates complementary elements from two or more sources. In short large travel companies, such as the Travel Lodge Company, are integrating their hotel information with Google maps producing an interactive map with markers for each hotel.

This concept gives a whole new way to search for accommodation online. Instead of scrolling through multiple pages of hotels you type in your destination and visually see where they are. Using Google’s satellite technology you can even see bird’s eye photos of your chosen accommodation. Google maps also provide driving directions. This can be extremely helpful when finding your destination.

All these technologies can be combined into one map, although this isn’t always the most efficient way to search for accommodation. Therefore most companies have a directory search alongside a map or provide a small map popup, such as Tripadvisor.co.uk.

It’s hard to tell if this trend will last but it’s not just travel companies using this technology, for example, ononemap.com, this provides information on properties for sale in the UK all on one map! The BBC has a wildlife project (World on the Move) that tracks animals in real time! Other such site as Bookbymap.com are using Google maps to help people book not just hotels but villas, guest houses, B&Bs, apartments, holiday parks, marinas, restaurants, cinemas and cottages.

Getting to Gatwick

Getting to Gatwick

If you need to travel through Gatwick airport you might want to spend a few days exploring the capital city of Britain. Staying in a hotel close to the airport itself means you spend less time travelling with luggage and makes the trip between airport and hotel a short and easy one.
There are plenty of airport hotels to choose from and, as the name suggests, an airport hotel lies in close proximity to the terminal buildings, saving you precious travel time and making the trip straightforward and hassle free.
You could also opt to stay in a town close to Gatwick airport. The airport itself is located on the southern side of London, south of the M25 ring road, so the towns of Horley and Crawley are both possibilities as they are a short car journey away.
Horley has a wide variety of good old fashioned English pubs where you can enjoy a leisurely drink and soak up some quintessentially English culture. There are also plenty of restaurants to choose from so you’re sure to find something to suit everyone.
Horley has an abundance of gardens where a lazy afternoon can be spent. There are also a few castles dotted around the area and there is even an old fashioned steam train which you can take a trip through the heart of the Sussex Weald on.
Crawley is renowned as a shopping town where the County Mall Shopping Centre, Queens Square and historic High Street combine to offer the best mix of stores in the area.
There is also a wealth of night clubs, cinemas, parks and restaurants as well as a theatre so you will not be stuck for things to fill your time with.
Due to the close proximity of Gatwick to the city of London, you may well want to take a trip into the city centre. London is well served with public transport links and the Gatwick Express train takes you from the airport to Central London in a mere thirty minutes so you could be at the heart of all the action in no time.
Once you set foot in central London you really are spoilt for choice. From art and culture to green spaces and rivers walks and everything in between, London has a mind boggling array of activities on offer.
If your time in the city is limited then do a spot of research beforehand and pick out the things you really want to see and do so you can make the most of your time in one of Europe’s most vibrant capitals.
Whether you are looking at Gatwick airport hotels or otherwise its worth remembering that Gatwick is London’s second busiest airport after Heathrow with around 90 airlines carrying more than 32 million passengers every year.
Even if you are staying near the airport, allow yourself enough time to get through check-in desks and security checks and make your trip as trouble free as possible.

Brighton Beach

Brighton Beach

Brighton beach is one of the most popular destinations in the UK, attracting millions of visitors each year. Whether it is for a weekend stay or a longer break, there are an abundance of hotels in Brighton that will cater for your every need.

The Pier is perhaps the city’s most iconic landmark. It dates back to 1899, and opens at 10.00am each day. The pier is home to a famous funfair that opens at midday and is renowned for its thrilling rides, like the Wild River Flume that goes up a water mountain and then climaxes in the ultimate splash landing. The Crazy Mouse twists and spins, and the truly white-knuckle Super Booster stands at over 125 feet tall and travels from 0-60 mph in less than three seconds. The ride takes passengers to a height of 38 metres before the thrilling sheer drop. The fair offers a variety of other attractions, and there are rides for children of all ages.

Brighton Pier is also renowned for its amusements. The Palace of Fun is a must for its innovative and interactive games – including many well-known console titles – and some of the prizes to be won include games consoles and digital cameras. The Family Entertainment Centre located in the Dome has arcade games for all ages, as well as a food-court. For winding down after hours of fun, visitors can take advantage of the amazing sea views at Horatio’s Bar.

Brighton’s seafront is a tourist attraction in itself. It is lined with bars, restaurants, nightclubs and amusement arcades, and also features some of the most famous hotels in Brighton. The famous shingle beach is vast, and has been awarded a Blue Flag Beach Award for cleanliness. To the east of the beach there is a modern sports complex, with facilities for almost anything, including beach volleyball and “ultimate Frisbee”

To the west of the seafront is The Monarch’s Way, an ancient long-distance footpath measuring 615-miles (990 km).The path is historically linked to the escape route of King Charles II in 1651 following the Battle of Worcester.

Brighton Marina is a man-made marina with a scale of around 127 acres. The marina features shops, restaurants, bars, health clubs, a casino and cinema. It is the place to go for a sightseeing boating trip, and various operators also offer lessons in sailing, yachting and powerboating. The Marina is conveniently situated for the central hotels in Brighton.

Brighton really does offer something for everyone. For the more broad-minded visitor, there is a very well-known naturist (nudist) beach, which can be found to the east of the Kemptown area.
